Educational Programs

Breakout Educational Sessions I (pick one) 8:30 AM to 9:20 AM

1. Smokin’ in the Boys’ Room– Enacting Non-Smoking Policies in Community Associations. Presented by Stefan Richter, Esq., Clemons Richter & Reiss, and Cindy Simpson, CMCA, AMS, PCAM. Session presenters have recently guided a community association through the process of amending their declaration to prohibit smoking (including inside the private units) and are working on a second such case. This session will review how the process is manageable and how some associations can be very successful in this effort. Presenters will review how to successfully amend a declaration, how to determine guidelines for grandfathering existing smokers, and how to sell the concept to owners.
Session 1 is appropriate for managers and community association volunteer leaders.

2. Fiduciary Duty: A Partnership Between Community Managers and Board Members. Presented by Andrew J. Podolski, Esq., Stark & Stark; and Brian Patterson, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, CCR Management.
Session 2 is appropriate for managers and community association volunteer leaders.

Breakout Educational Sessions II (pick one) 9:30 AM to 10:20 PM

1. Hit Me With Your Best Shot: Dealing with Difficult Situations & People. Presented by Sara Austin, Esq., Austin Law. Board members are faced with various people issues on a regular basis. Emotions and conflicting personal agendas may arise between board members. Also, owners may publicly air their grievances (resulting in other owners getting up in arms in support or in opposition). Learn how to diffuse these situations - or deal with escalations - and keep your association on solid legal ground while still fulfilling its fiduciary duties to members.
Session 1 is appropriate for managers and community association volunteer leaders.

2. Accidents Will Happen: Volunteer Accident Liability Insurance. Presented by Jeanette Pironti, Smith Insurance Associates. Most associations have volunteers but lack necessary insurance protection. While there are many benefits of volunteer labor, there are also many chances for unseen accidents which could end up costing the association if they don't have the right coverage in place. Community managers and board members should be made aware that Volunteer Accident Liability Insurance is available and be educated on what it entails.
Session 2 is appropriate for managers and community association volunteer leaders.

3. Ants Marching: Pest Management Challenges from Urban High Rise to Suburban Garden Style Communities. Presented by Joe Silvestrini, Pest Control Technicians. Challenges to pest management exist in many different community environments. This session will examine various types of pest control issues, including why mice and roaches are problems in some communities and what managers need to know about inspection and sanitation to help prevent these problems. We’ll discuss the history, biology and treatment options for bed bugs. Finally, the session will explain why “Back to the Future Pests" such as Clothes Months and American Roach infestations are making a big comeback and how community associations can deal with these issues.
Session 3 is appropriate for community association volunteer leaders.

Bonus Breakout Educational Session 2:30 PM to 3:20 PM

1. Private Eyes Are Watching You: Protecting Your Community. Presented by Tim Snowden, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, FirstService Residential, AAMC & Dave Pearson, 215 Secure
Community associations are a target for theft and vandalism. A lack of security in your community could result in an easy target for today's criminal. Speakers will discuss options for staffing and how to integrate today's newest technologies into your community's security plan and will review how to make an assessment of your security needs.
This session is appropriate for managers and community association volunteer leaders.
